THE MEANING OF TANTRIC SEX

THE TANTRA SAYS

The Hands

Tantric place special emphasis on the care of the hands, "the tactile instruments from which pleasure is drawn." The rituals often specify use of the thumb and index finger of both the right and left hands. Tantric texts direct the Tantric to "trim short as possible the nails of the thumb and forefingers to avoid causing pain and unwanted abrasions."
The nails should be trimmed short enough to make the thumbs and index fingers "a smoothly rounded cylinder a unit for the pleasure of touching." Indeed, many Tantric recognize each other by observing the carefully manicured nails of the thumb and index fingers.

The Genitals

Tantric texts devote much space to the care and cleanliness of the genitals. The hygienic reasons for this are obvious, as are the esthetic ones.
But, say the Tantra texts, there is another reason: the use of a warm, wet cloth to cleanse the genitals is yet another effective method of developing awareness of one's sexuality. The logic of this will become more apparent as you proceed with the Awareness Rituals.
Many Tantric make their cleanliness a ritual. The use of the bidet makes this easier. But even without such a convenience, a deliberately planned program of genital cleanliness is important.

The Lights

            "Tantra abhors darkness."
Practice all Tantric Rituals in the light never in a darkened room.
Darkness deprives you of the sense of sight and Tantric Sexual Rituals are designed to stimulate all the senses. You would not want to reduce the value of the Rituals by 20%, and that is what you would do if you chose to practice them in darkness.
Instructions for specific lighting. are set forth in the preface to the Couples' Rituals, "The Seven Nights of the Tantra."

Food

The Tantra places no special emphasis on food, except that it suggests the sexual enjoyment of those .foods which are usually forbidden in high-caste Hindu society: meat, alcohol, fish, and grains.
Wine, cheese, and bread are recommended as the repast during the "Seven Nights of the Tantra," but they are not mandatory.
Tantra believes that you are free to enter into any activity you wish in life, and that you should do whatever you can to stimulate all of the senses to their highest degree. Such stimulation is recognized by the Tantra as being a highly individual matter.

Consent and Commitment

The Tantric arrives at the epicenter of enlightenment only after a ritualistic climb.
Tantra forbids that any act ever be committed by a Tantric which infringes upon the human rights of another. A Tantric Master will not ever attempt to persuade a non-Tantric to enter into Tantric Rituals.
Commitment, says the Tantra, must come' from within.
No one is proselytized into Tantric thinking or activity.
You must arrive at the point of choice and enter into the rituals with the consent of your whole being, with total commitment.

The Meaning of "Love"

In most languages, and specifically in English, the word love is extremely difficult to define adequately.
But in the Tantric sense, the word is easily defined. Because Tantra is free of inhibition, there are no "hang ups" to draw romantic and social connotations into the use of so simple a word.
Tantra, as you recall, means "essence."
Love, in the Tantric sense, means simply:
"I recognize and accept your essence."
